Do you know that Orkut, which was created on January 24, 2004 by Orkut Buyukkokten and currently owned & operated by Google, is the #1 social networking website in India! And it has left its biggest competitor Facebook (launched on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg) behind in the race- as on February 2010. Though both the websites were launched at almost the same time, Orkut leads the Indian market in terms of its users while Facebook is more popular in other countries. As per a research by ComScore in February 2010, it has been found that in India, more than 68% of the online population visit social networking sites and the average number of visits per visitor per month is 13. While in Asia-Pacific, more than 50% of the total online population visits social networking sites, making it to nearly 240.3 million visitors per month in February 2010. Social networking has gained popularity these days & is becoming a passion and craze for people, especially in India (which is also clear from the figures above). The reason for this is that the Indian youth has become more tech savvy now. Also, these websites not only reconnect people across the globe but also help in finding good jobs, sharing knowledge, possible business opportunities, sharing interests & hobbies and dating. The community building aspect is also gaining popularity on these websites as it helps in knowing the public opinion on various topics and your thoughts/ opinion can reach masses worldwide. Moreover, certain interesting contests also keep running on these sites which catch attention of people. Hundreds of social networking websites have emerged these days. Orkut, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Hi5, Bebo, Ibibo and Bigadda are just a few to name, and each one of them is trying hard to make it to the top. Though the share of Indian users in Orkut’s total number of visitors is only 20.44%, around 46.8% of the users use Orkut in India. But the pace at which Facebook users are increasing, may take it ahead of Orkut in a short span of time. I personally owe a lot to the social networking sites as they helped me in reconnecting with my old friends, looking for a better job and also in gaining knowledge on various current affairs. Now getting in touch with people & increasing your intellect is just a click away. Life is again full of excitement and each new day is bringing a unique sense of excitement with it. ‘Experience The Simplicity’ at http://www.infolona.com http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/Infolona/299191684759?ref=ts
