The time was 6:00 PM. I was rushing to the parlour nearby, as I had a colleague’s marriage to attend the very next day. My only need was to trim my curly hair a bit so that it does not look too scary. As I was parking my bike in the parking lot, I saw a middle aged woman rushing out of her Volkswagen and dashing inside the parlour. I followed her. As soon as she got in the parlour, she called out- ‘can someone attend to me? It is urgent.’ A young girl politely asked her what she wants. She said, ‘See, I want to look better. It is my son’s marriage tomorrow. So, just do a makeover so that I don’t look like his mom!’ This middle aged woman in the parlour reminded me of my grand mom. She used to glow even at the age of 70. She never went to a parlour, never did waxing, bleaching or a makeover. But she never looked 70. When I asked her about the secret, she explained; ‘You are defined by your skin. The easiest mantra to look young is to keep yourself happy all the time. Your skin reflects your mind.’ She used to have her own beauty parlour at home. Some easy beauty tips she taught me were: 1. Gram flour paste: Add 1-2 spoons of gram flour in water and apply on your skin immediately. Wash it once it dries up completely. It is one of the best cleansing agents for your skin. 2. Sandalwood paste: Take a spoon full of sandalwood powder, add some rose water to it and keep it for some time. Apply this paste on your face and remove it after 15 minutes. Your skin will look ecstatic. Do this three or four time a week to enjoy long term results. 3. Cucumber juice: This is a nice astringent. The juice should be applied before sunrise or after sunset for better results. The idea is to avoid contact with sun rays. Some other useful tips to nurture your skin are given below: 1. Drink a lot of water. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water flushes the toxins out of your body, making your skin look shiny and healthy 2. Protect your skin from dust and UV (Ultra Violet) rays. Use a sun screen lotion whenever you go out and wash your skin in cold water as soon as you are home. 3. Sleep at least 7 hours daily. This makes your skin look healthier and you will feel refreshed. 4. Avoid junk food and instant food items. Processed food will quicken the aging of your skin. 5. Alcohol causes expansion of blood vessels resulting in skin irritation and red spots. Avoid consuming alcohol. 6. Practise relaxation methods like yoga and meditation. This will help you maintain a stress free life, thereby making your skin look healthy. 7. Eat plenty of leafy vegetables and fruits. As my grandmother said, all these tips are secondary. The primary point is to keep yourself happy and cheerful. You will never get old if you have a young and healthy mind. --Archana
